Ethereum community member Kat has launched an ETH-powered campaign to assist in evacuating local residents to safety while the tensions between Israel and Gaza persist.

Over $55,000 has been gathered in the last 24 hours for families trying to flee the Gaza Strip by a new effort called ETH Evacuations. The campaign is launched in the midst of reports of escalating violence in the Gaza Strip following the incursion into Israel on October 7 by militants linked with Hamas, which resulted in the displacement of hundreds of Palestinians.

The initiative is being led by @Katalunia030, a former head of product at the Ethereum network's creator-focused Zora platform. On March 10, she first unveiled ethevacuations.xyz, a platform that allows ETH donations to be sent straight to Gazan families.

The campaign gained momentum very quickly, and the cryptocurrency community actively participated in disseminating information. Since her trip to the unstable country in June 2023, Kat has contributed to the cause and taken part in a number of philanthropic endeavours.

Rafah crossing, the only point of entry between Egypt and Palestine, charges roughly 1.5 ETH (roughly $5k) for an adult and 0.5 ETH (roughly $2k) for a child to enter the Gaza border safely. Anyone crossing by that route is allegedly required to pay the "coordination fees." These costs are covered by the campaign.

Kat initially began helping her friends and colleagues who were struggling to evacuate. As the donations picked up pace, she extended the campaign to the broader community. By March 13, the campaign was able to safely evacuate two families away from harm.

As of the latest update, the campaign, which has been live for 3.5 weeks, has raised over $100,000 in ETH. The donations were received in multiple cryptocurrencies, suggesting that the efforts were not just limited to the Ethereum community.

The latest donation to the campaign was a whopping 10 ETH, valued at approximately $32,868 at the time of receipt. However, the donor’s identity remains unknown.

The advertising also demonstrates the transparency that blockchain technology provides. This is a crucial component of charitable endeavours, particularly in light of the numerous instances of fraud committed in the name of charity.
