Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the now-collapsed cryptocurrency exchange FTX, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for orchestrating a massive fraud that resulted in billions of dollars in losses for customers, investors, and lenders.

Bankman-Fried, once a rising star in the crypto industry, had amassed a net worth of $26 billion before the age of 30, fueled by the surge in bitcoin and other digital asset values. He was known for his unkempt appearance, dedication to effective altruism, and significant political donations, including to Democratic candidates.

However, the trial revealed that Bankman-Fried had been looting FTX customer accounts since 2017, using the funds to finance illegal political donations, bribes, risky investments, and a lavish lifestyle. Prosecutors labeled this case one of the largest financial frauds in U.S. history, with losses totaling $8 billion for FTX customers, $1.7 billion for FTX's equity investors, and $1.3 billion for Alameda Research lenders.

Despite Bankman-Fried's apology and expression of remorse, the judge was unconvinced, stating that the defendant had not demonstrated genuine remorse or accepted full responsibility for his actions. The judge also expressed concern about the potential for future harm from Bankman-Fried, who was described as "extremely intelligent" but condemned for his deceitful actions.
