The once-bustling marketplace for the privacy-focused Monero, LocalMonero, has announced its closure. This move comes amidst a growing global squeeze on privacy coins and services.

LocalMonero, launched in 2017, mirrored the wildly popular LocalBitcoins platform but catered specifically to Monero users. On May 7th, they abruptly halted new sign-ups and trade postings, with a complete shutdown scheduled for November 7th. While citing a mix of internal and external pressures, the company remained tight-lipped about specifics.

This closure isn't happening in a vacuum. Recent months have seen a relentless crackdown on privacy-focused services. In April, the US Department of Justice arrested the founders of Samourai Wallet, a Monero mixer, on money laundering charges. This followed the shuttering of other popular mixing services like Wasabi CoinJoin and Trezor Coinjoin.

The US Treasury Department further escalated matters by blacklisting Tornado Cash, a prominent crypto mixer, effectively barring Americans from using it.

LocalMonero's demise has left a void in the Monero ecosystem, particularly for users seeking a direct fiat-to-Monero conversion without revealing their identity (KYC). Privacy advocate "Seth For Privacy" lamented the loss, highlighting LocalMonero's crucial role in facilitating anonymous transactions.

However, the platform's team remains optimistic about Monero's future. They point to the upcoming launch of decentralized exchanges like Haveno and Serai, along with the recent Full-Chain Membership Proofs (FCMPs) privacy upgrade.
