The primary catalyst for this optimism stems from the swift approval by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) of the first spot Ethereum exchange-traded fund (ETF). This development follows the agency's greenlighting of all 19b-4 forms in May, setting the stage for the product to go live and become accessible to investors and institutions within a span of two weeks.

However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential implications of the spot Ethereum ETF approval on the market. Some analysts have drawn parallels with the launch of the spot Bitcoin ETF in January, which led to a brief price drop. Nevertheless, one analyst has stepped forward to allay fears, emphasizing that the impact of Grayscale selling its Ethereum holdings (ETHE) once spot ETFs become active would be minimal, thereby ensuring stability and confidence in the market.

The current scenario surrounding Ethereum is marked by a sense of unpredictability. The market was unprepared for the SEC's expedited approval of the product this year. In contrast, Bitcoin prices experienced a significant surge from mid-October as the markets anticipated the spot ETF launch in January. The analyst's reassurance is rooted in the observation that, unlike Grayscale's GBTC before the approval of spot ETFs, the discount in ETHE is relatively narrow, ranging between 1-3%. Grayscale currently manages over $10 billion of ETHE. This minimal discount implies that traders who purchased ETHE at a discount have had sufficient time to sell at a price close to the market rate. As a result, even when a spot Ethereum ETF goes live, the selling pressure is expected to be minimal. Only time will tell if ETH will soar or plunge in the next two weeks.
