Coinbase, a cryptocurrency exchange headquartered in the United States, has initiated a political action committee (PAC) under its Stand With Crypto project, aiming to advocate for pragmatic digital asset regulations. The PAC, introduced on May 10 via an announcement on X, is designed for approximately 450,000 members to contribute to candidates participating in the forthcoming 2024 U.S. elections. Stand With Crypto, established by Coinbase in 2023, disclosed on its website that it had garnered over $86 million in donations from users, though the allocation of these funds to the PAC remains unclear.

Nick Carr, the chief strategist of Stand With Crypto, conveyed the objective of endorsing and supporting candidates dedicated to safeguarding the rights of the project's advocates throughout the November elections, as reported by Reuters. Since its inception, the crypto advocacy group has engaged in various activities, including hosting forums for U.S. presidential candidates and lobbying D.C. lawmakers to endorse crypto-friendly legislation. The project assesses lawmakers contesting in 2024 on a grading scale ranging from A to F and recommends candidates such as Bernie Moreno for Ohio’s Senate race and Shomari Figures for a congressional seat in Alabama.

With approximately six months until election day in the U.S., the outcome will determine the political control of crucial bodies like the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the presidency. PACs focused on crypto-related agendas, such as Fairshake and its affiliated organizations, have collectively amassed over $100 million to bolster candidates supporting favorable digital asset policies. Notable races, like the one for the Massachusetts Senate seat held by Democrat Elizabeth Warren, highlight the clash between pro- and anti-crypto contenders, exemplified by Republican John Deaton’s defense against Senator Warren’s stance on cryptocurrencies.

Rick Claypool, a researcher at Public Citizen, emphasized the significance of primary races involving crypto-backed candidates, underscoring the potential impact of super PAC spending on congressional control in the subsequent general election. As per Federal Election Commission regulations, individual contributions to a PAC are capped at $5,000, potentially allowing Stand With Crypto access to up to $2.2 billion from its current membership base. In contrast, super PACs can receive unlimited contributions from corporations, with Coinbase having previously donated substantial amounts to Fairshake and its affiliated entities.
