Metaverse Explores New VR-Oriented Sensory Dimensions at CES 2023

At CES 2023 in Las Vegas, various companies unveiled their groundbreaking metaverse offerings. HTC, for example, presented a headset enabling users to experience virtual scents. While tactile sensations still face challenges, they can be achieved with a higher price tag if consumers are willing.

These virtual headsets are slated for release later this year. The metaverse, also known as a three-dimensional virtual realm, facilitates social interaction and networking. CES 2023, spanning four days, brought together industry players anticipating a potential launch in 2023.

OVR Technology exhibited a headset capable of emitting eight aromas, blending to create diverse scents. The aim is to provide users with a calming experience akin to a spa visit infused with Instagram-like features.

Aaron Wisniewski, CEO and Founder of OVR Technology, emphasized that the metaverse industry is evolving to drive commerce, education, and entertainment. He stressed the importance of technology appealing to people's emotions for long-term viability.

This sentiment is echoed by medical experts utilizing technology for complex procedures. In 2021, a neurosurgeon at Johns Hopkins performed spinal fusion surgery using augmented reality.

Lumus' advanced technology is already employed by fighter pilots, underwater welders, and surgeons for situational awareness. The widespread adoption of virtual reality is expected to benefit society, making tasks like attending meetings and accessing educational content more convenient.

However, the acceptance and adaptation of this technology remain uncertain. Meta and Microsoft are heavily investing in their metaverse divisions, while companies like Walmart and Nike are also exploring initiatives, albeit with unclear benefits.

Estimates suggest the metaverse could generate $5 trillion by 2030, per McKinsey. However, skepticism persists, particularly given its predominantly gaming-focused track record and high costs. Yet, there's potential for commercial applications, such as interior designers showcasing designs to clients or car retailers offering virtual test drives.

Despite challenges, innovations in the metaverse offer hope for wider adoption following product launches.
