The Solana community has opted to activate the Timely Vote Credits (TVC) mechanism on its mainnet to enhance the blockchain's transaction processing speed and overall efficiency.

The TVC mechanism introduces a novel incentive structure for validators, rewarding quicker transaction processing with increased vote credits.

This decision follows extensive testing and community deliberations, outlined in the Solana Improvement Document 33 (SIMD-0033) released on March 14.

Encouraging faster voting

Previously, Solana validators employed diverse strategies to maximize vote credits, including cautious voting on fork outcomes to avoid commitment to a dead fork, known as "vote lag." This often resulted in delayed block confirmations, directly impacting network performance.

By adjusting the rewards system to favor prompt votes, the TVC feature aims to mitigate these delays, prompting validators to expedite their voting processes and enhance transaction confirmation times.

The activation of TVC involves two pivotal updates. Firstly, it replaces the existing vote account structure with "LandedVote," incorporating vote latency data to prepare the system for the new rewards mechanism. Secondly, it enables the vote program to consider this latency when distributing vote credits, aiming to significantly reward timeliness.

Thorough testing

Before deployment on the mainnet, the TVC feature underwent rigorous testing on the Solana testnet through unit tests and a specialized test cluster. The community validated the feature's effectiveness and reliability, ensuring it functions as intended and supports network goals without compromising security or integrity.

The process leading to TVC's mainnet activation included an initial eight-epoch testing phase on the testnet, followed by discussions and verification of stake weights among validators.

The community engaged in an extensive decision-making process, utilizing a voting system that allocated tokens based on stake weights to ensure a fair and democratic assessment of the proposal.

The successful outcome of the vote, with overwhelming support (98%), underscores the Solana community's commitment to fostering innovation and improving the blockchain's capabilities.

The Solana Developer Forums and Solana Tech Discord channel played vital roles in facilitating discussion, collaboration, and information dissemination regarding the TVC feature.
