BtcTurk, a prominent Turkish cryptocurrency exchange, has recently fallen victim to a cyberattack, resulting in the compromise of its hot wallets. The attack, which occurred on June 22, led to the partial loss of assets stored in these hot wallets. However, the exchange has assured users that its cold wallets, which hold the majority of its assets, remain secure.

The exact amount lost in the attack has not been disclosed, but renowned on-chain investigator ZachXBT has estimated that approximately $54 million worth of Avalanche tokens were likely connected to the cyberattack. The funds were transferred to various exchanges, including Binance and Coinbase, using the THORChain protocol. Subsequently, the stolen funds were converted into Bitcoin and moved to two separate wallets.

Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange, has taken action to halt funds linked to the cyberattack, freezing over $5.3 million in stolen funds. Richard Teng, CEO of Binance, confirmed that his company is assisting BtcTurk in investigating the incident. The collaboration between the two exchanges has led to the recovery of $5.3 million worth of the stolen assets.

In response to the attack, BtcTurk has temporarily halted all withdrawal and deposit transactions on its platform. The exchange has assured users that it is working diligently to resolve the situation and will resume operations once the necessary evaluations are completed. Despite the incident, BtcTurk claims that its financial position remains robust, and it has sufficient funds to overcome this setback.

The cyberattack on BtcTurk is the second such incident on a crypto exchange in 2024, following a security breach at Japanese platform DMM Bitcoin in May, which resulted in the loss of $305 million in BTC. The frequency of such attacks highlights the need for vigilance and stringent security measures in the cryptocurrency space. Investors are advised to adopt best practices such as using strong and unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, diversifying investments, and staying alert to potential fraud and phishing attempts.
