The UK government has invested £12 million in innovative projects addressing the challenges posed by rapid artificial intelligence (AI) development. This funding, allocated through Responsible AI UK (RAi UK), aims to ensure responsible AI growth and bridge the gaps in health, social security, law enforcement, and financial services.

Two projects focus on strengthening law enforcement and financial services, tackling issues like money laundering and terrorist financing. Another project, led by Prof. Marion Oswald, explores AI's potential in addressing information overload and operational inefficiency in law enforcement. Meanwhile, a £3.5 million project, led by Dr. Simone Stumpf, develops tools to detect potential risks and encourage public participation in AI decision-making.

Additionally, £3.5 million is dedicated to understanding the limitations of large language models (LLMs) in medical and social contexts, led by Prof. Maria Liakata. The Participatory Harm Auditing Workbenches and Methodologies project, based at the University of Glasgow, receives £3.5 million to improve AI misprediction and generation incentives.

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) provides additional support with a £4 million investment, reinforcing these projects and facilitating public participation in AI research and policymaking. This funding is part of a larger £1 billion project portfolio aimed at bolstering AI research and development, enhancing the UK's competitiveness in ethical AI development.
