Despite the growing popularity of blockchain games like Axie Infinity, Gods Unchained, Star Atlas, Decentraland, and The Sandbox within the blockchain community, their influence on mainstream gaming remains limited. A recent survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Unstoppable Games revealed that most gamers are still unaware of blockchain gaming and its potential benefits.

The survey, which polled 2,000 adults, found that 52% of respondents had never heard of blockchain gaming, while 32% were familiar with it but had never played a blockchain game. This lack of awareness highlights the vast potential for game developers and studios to tap into the blockchain gaming market.

When asked about the issue of in-game purchases and downloadable content (DLC) being lost due to game server shutdowns, 63% of respondents believed that customers should receive refunds for these items. In contrast, 34% thought that the decision to shut down game servers should be made by the gaming community.

Blockchain gaming offers a solution to this problem by linking in-game assets to nonfungible tokens (NFTs). This allows gamers to resell their digital assets, such as characters and items, which would otherwise have no resale value. The highly centralized nature of the gaming industry leaves gamers vulnerable to studio closures and server shutdowns, which can result in the loss of hard-earned in-game assets.

The current state of the gaming industry also leaves little room for players to generate income from their favorite games. However, blockchain games like Axie Infinity are changing this by creating resell markets for in-game items and providing players with sources of income. In 2021, Axie Infinity generated $1.3 billion in revenue and enabled some players to earn up to $1,300 per month.

Axie Infinity is a prime example of how blockchain can unlock value by leveraging in-game assets and robust player economies. By creating a platform where players can collect, breed, and battle characters known as Axies, Axie Infinity has successfully bridged the gap between gaming and financial opportunities.
