Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com have joined forces to pioneer the development of one of the first web browser and email-compatible Web3 domains, through an application with the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

In an announcement made today, the strategic collaboration aims to establish a ".blockchain" Web3 domain, with Blockchain.com leading the charge by submitting an application to ICANN for its new generic top-level domain (gTLD) registration round. Although the official application process begins with the launch of the Applicant's Guidebook next year, the application window is set to open in April 2026.

Should the application prove successful, the .blockchain domain will join the ranks of ICANN-registered gTLDs like .com, .net, and .org, leveraging Blockchain.com's extensive user base of 40 million verified users. Blockchain.com boasts facilitating the creation of over 90 million crypto wallets and facilitating more than $1.2 trillion in crypto transactions.

Unstoppable Domains COO Sandy Carter expressed excitement about the partnership, emphasizing the potential to deliver a low-cost Web3 domain solution and strategically plan for ICANN's upcoming work.

This collaboration between Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com follows a similar initiative from Ethereum Name Service (ENS), which recently introduced browser-compatible ".box" web domains in April.

The .box domain, already recognized as an ICANN-approved top-level domain, marks the first on-chain gTLD included in the ENS manager app alongside .eth. Domains hosted on .box are searchable and indexable on major browsers like Google Chrome and Safari, making them compatible with popular email services.

Web3 domain names offer an alternative to the traditional Domain Name System (DNS), simplifying transactions by translating human-readable names like "alice.eth" to complex crypto addresses.

As the Web3 landscape evolves, the collaboration between Unstoppable Domains and Blockchain.com signals a pivotal step towards bridging Web3 domains with the conventional Internet space, potentially opening the door for numerous Web3 TLDs to establish their own Web2 counterparts in the future.
