Former President Donald Trump has significantly increased his focus on digital assets following his conviction on 34 felony counts in New York. Once skeptical about cryptocurrencies, Trump has made a dramatic pivot, integrating blockchain technology into his 2024 campaign strategy. After announcing his reelection campaign in 2022, he quickly launched a non-fungible token (NFT) collection.

Amid multiple high-profile legal battles, Trump has made cryptocurrency a central theme of his campaign. Following his conviction, he proposed that all Bitcoin should be mined in the United States if he were to be reelected and criticized President Joe Biden's stance on crypto. Trump's campaign has also announced that it would accept crypto contributions, and he is reportedly considering a speech at the Bitcoin 2024 conference in Nashville.

Matt Gaetz and Crypto Legislation

Florida Representative Matt Gaetz, currently under investigation by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Ethics for obstruction related to allegations of “sexual misconduct and illicit drug use,” has also turned to cryptocurrency. Gaetz has previously supported crypto-friendly legislation, such as the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century (FIT21) Act.

On June 25, Gaetz introduced a bill to allow the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to accept Bitcoin payments for federal income taxes. This move, he claimed, was inspired by his visit to the inauguration of El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, a known proponent of Bitcoin. Gaetz, who is running for reelection in 2024, faces primary competition from fellow Republican Aaron Dimmock and potentially Democratic candidate Gay Valimont in the general election, neither of whom have taken strong positions on cryptocurrency.

Joe Biden’s Tentative Crypto Engagement

Current President Joe Biden may also be considering using cryptocurrency to shift the narrative. While it's unclear if his reelection campaign will accept crypto donations, Biden has participated in discussions on digital assets with congressional leaders. His administration has seen the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), led by Gary Gensler, take a hard stance on crypto, filing numerous enforcement actions against crypto firms.
