UwU Lend, a decentralized lending protocol, was hacked for $3.7 million today, according to blockchain security firms Beosin and Blocksec. This marks the second exploit within a week, with both attacks attributed to the same perpetrator leveraging flash loans to exploit vulnerabilities in the protocol.

The stolen assets have been converted to ether and are currently held in the attacker’s wallet. This latest breach comes on the heels of a similar incident on June 10, which resulted in a $20 million loss for the protocol. Beosin identified the initial exploit as a flash loan attack that manipulated the price oracles of the sUSDe stablecoin on the platform. In response to the first attack, UwU Lend acknowledged the breach and provided an update the following day, stating they had identified and resolved the security vulnerability, which they claimed was unique to the sUSDe market oracle.

Flash loan attacks, a sophisticated form of exploit, allow attackers to borrow large sums of cryptocurrency without any collateral, execute complex transactions, and repay the loan in the same block. This type of attack often targets vulnerabilities in smart contracts and price oracles, enabling the attacker to manipulate asset prices and drain funds.

UwU Lend was established by Michael Patryn, also known by the aliases Omar Dhanani and 0xSifu. Patryn previously co-founded QuadrigaCX, a Canadian cryptocurrency exchange that collapsed in 2019 amidst allegations of fraud, leaving thousands of investors with significant losses. Patryn’s involvement in both projects has drawn scrutiny from the cryptocurrency community, given his controversial past.
