Uzbekistan, a country in Asia, has announced a significant increase in fees for crypto operations, with the aim of bolstering state revenue from the burgeoning sector. The National Agency for Prospective Projects (NAPP) foresees a doubling of revenue once the new fee structure comes into effect. Crypto retailers will now face a substantially higher monthly fee of 185 BRV, equivalent to 62.9 million som ($5,003), compared to the previous fee of 20 BRV, approximately 6.8 million som ($540).

The NAPP assures that the revised pricing will not jeopardize the financial stability of industry service providers. Scheduled to take effect on June 20, the new fee structure follows closely on the heels of a Memorandum of Understanding inked between the NAPP and stablecoin issuer Tether. Under this agreement, Tether pledges to explore and promote blockchain-based innovations in Uzbekistan, including stablecoins and digital asset tokenization.

While specific details of the partnership remain undisclosed, Tether has expressed its commitment to collaborating with Uzbekistan's regulators to establish a legal and regulatory framework for crypto assets within the country. This development occurs amid the NAPP's pursuit of legal action against Binance, alleging unlicensed operation and outstanding fines. Uzbekistan has restricted the provision of crypto services to licensed firms since 2023, with the first licenses granted to local crypto entities in November 2022.

Prior to this regulatory shift, Uzbekistan had barred access to several prominent international crypto exchanges, including Binance, FTX, and Huobi, citing allegations of unlicensed activities. Notably, only licensed exchanges are permitted in Uzbekistan, with trading servers mandated to be domestically hosted. These measures underscore the government's efforts to regulate and formalize the crypto industry within the country, aligning with broader global trends towards regulatory clarity and oversight in the burgeoning digital asset space.
