Recent developments have led many to speculate whether Vanguard is reevaluating its stance on cryptocurrencies. The company has filed a new "Vanguard Specialized Funds" with the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which includes a mention of digital currency.

Vanguard's Definition of Crypto Terms

The filing provides detailed definitions of key crypto-related terms. Vanguard defines digital currency as a digital asset that serves as a store of value, medium of exchange, or unit of account. It is characterized as a digital asset not issued or guaranteed by any jurisdiction, central bank, or public authority. The company further explains that digital currency relies on algorithmic techniques to regulate the generation of new units and records transactions on a decentralized network or distributed ledger.

Vanguard also distinguishes between digital currency and digital security tokens. The latter encompasses digital assets that are neither digital currencies nor digital utility tokens. These tokens often derive their value from, or represent an interest in, a separate asset or pool of assets.

The third category, digital utility tokens, are described as digital assets that provide access to a particular network, product, or service.

Vanguard's Stance on Spot Bitcoin ETFs

It is unclear what direction Vanguard is heading with its digital asset "sensitization." However, the company has previously expressed its disinterest in spot Bitcoin ETFs, citing the highly speculative and unregulated nature of the broader crypto market. In his place, Salim Ramji, a former executive at BlackRock, has been appointed as the new CEO.
