An Ethereum address linked to Vitalik Buterin has transferred 30 Ether, valued at approximately $111,810, to support the legal defense fund for Tornado Cash developers, Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm. Buterin made the donation through the Juicebox platform, a decentralized fundraising protocol on Ethereum. As a result, the Tornado Cash legal defense fund, established earlier this year, now holds a total of 592.45 ETH, equivalent to about $2.2 million.

The cryptocurrency industry's backing for Tornado Cash developers is imperative due to their ongoing legal battles. Tornado Cash faced sanctions from the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Asset Control in August 2022, leading to Storm's arrest a year later. Pertsev has appealed the court's ruling, citing the need for a fair trial. However, the case is politically charged, given the use of crypto mixers like Tornado Cash for money laundering, notably by groups like Lazarus backed by North Korea. The arrests of Storm and Pertsev are seen as an assault on open-source development, prompting calls for action to safeguard coding rights.
