An Ethereum (ETH) address linked to Vitalik Buterin has transferred 30 Ether, valued at approximately $111,810, to the legal defense fund for Tornado Cash developers, Alexey Pertsev and Roman Storm. Buterin made the donation via the Juicebox platform, a decentralized fundraising protocol on the Ethereum network. As a result, the Tornado Cash legal defense fund, established earlier this year, now holds a total of 592.45 ETH, equivalent to about $2.2 million.

The Crypto Industry's Obligation to Support Tornado Cash Developers

The challenges facing Tornado Cash developers escalated after the United States Treasury’s Office of Foreign Asset Control (OFAC) imposed sanctions on the crypto mixer in August 2022. A year later, Roman Storm, a US-based web3 developer associated with Tornado Cash, was arrested. In early 2024, Alexey Pertsev was sentenced to 64 months in prison by a Dutch court, sparking outrage within the crypto community. Pertsev's work involved developing software through open source, akin to road construction workers who are not held accountable for accidents on the road. According to Juicebox, the legal fees for Roman and Alexey amount to $90k to $100k per month, necessitating support from the crypto industry.

As previously reported by Coinspeaker, Pertsev has appealed the judge’s ruling in hopes of a fair trial. However, the case is politically sensitive due to the laundering of billions of dollars through crypto mixers, particularly those associated with the North Korea-backed Lazarus Group.

“The arrests of Roman Storm and Alex Pertsev are perceived as a direct assault on the open-source development community and could have serious repercussions for developers who write and publish code. This underscores the urgency to safeguard our right to code,” emphasized the Justice DAO.

The utilization of Tornado Cash for privacy preservation has been endorsed by prominent Web3 executives. Additionally, online anonymity is not a criminal offense, as both businesses and individuals strive to safeguard their financial information.

For instance, Buterin previously utilized Tornado Cash to donate to the Ukrainian government amidst the ongoing conflict with Russia.
