Amidst ongoing debates surrounding Ethereum's transition from a proof-of-work (PoW) to a proof-of-stake (PoS) consensus mechanism, Vitalik Buterin, the co-founder of Ethereum, has firmly backed the network's move to PoS.

The discussion was sparked by Amanda Cassatt, the founder and CEO of web3 marketing studio Serotonin, who tweeted about the dissatisfaction expressed by some members of the Ethereum community regarding the network's current state. Cassatt clarified that these views were not personal but rather a reflection of conversations she had been privy to.

In her tweet, Cassatt stated, "Been interesting to notice a lot of Ethereum community members privately expressing the wish that it had stuck with PoW instead of transitioning to PoS."

Buterin promptly responded to the conversation, highlighting the drawbacks of the proof-of-work design and its misalignment with Ethereum's long-term vision.

Since its inception in July 2015, Ethereum, the second-largest blockchain by market capitalization, adopted a PoW consensus mechanism similar to Bitcoin (BTC). Under this model, miners played a crucial role in contributing to network security and the emission of new ETH tokens, allowing for the circulation of additional tokens.

However, this dynamic changed after "The Merge" in September 2022, when Ethereum underwent a massive technological overhaul and transitioned to a proof-of-stake infrastructure, replacing miners with stakers.

The move to PoS sparked a divide within the Ethereum community, with some decrying a shift in the blockchain's fundamental ethos. A group led by Chinese miner Chandler Guo even banded together to maintain a version of Ethereum's PoW chain, dubbed ETHW.

While the initiative initially aimed to challenge the PoS transition, it eventually dissolved its core team and adopted a decentralized approach. However, the project struggled to gain significant traction, with the ETHW native cryptocurrency trading below $4 per CoinMarketCap as of April 26.
