El Salvador has made a groundbreaking achievement by harnessing the power of its Tecapa volcano to mine a staggering 474 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $29 million, since 2021. This innovative approach utilizes the natural steam from the volcano to fuel 300 mining machines, making it a pioneering effort in the field of cryptocurrency mining.

The country has set up a unique system where 1.5 megawatts of the 102 megawatts generated by a state-owned plant are dedicated solely to Bitcoin mining. This initiative, which began around two years ago, not only reduces the environmental impact of mining but also showcases El Salvador's commitment to clean energy.

The "Bitcoin Office," a government agency, oversees this operation and has reported that the government now holds a total of 5,750 Bitcoins. The addition of nearly 474 Bitcoins since 2021 is a testament to the success of this eco-friendly approach, which diverges from traditional mining methods that rely heavily on electricity and contribute to pollution.

President Nayib Bukele, a strong advocate for Bitcoin, has been instrumental in driving this initiative forward. His vision for a sustainable and decentralized financial system has led El Salvador to become the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender, alongside the U.S. dollar.

While El Salvador has faced criticism from global institutions like the International Monetary Fund and World Bank due to the volatility of Bitcoin, the country's use of geothermal power has mitigated concerns about the environmental impact of mining. This innovative approach has also drawn attention from major mining groups, including Foundry USA, Ant pool, ViaBTC, F2Pool, and Binance Pool, which are collaborating to solve complex Bitcoin puzzles and confirm transactions.
