According to him, crypto is seen as "freedom money" that appeals to American conservatives and Chinese liberals, demographics not typically represented by the Democratic party. In a series of tweets, Balaji argued that crypto is a partisan issue in the US, with Democrats, who tend to be wealthier and more influential, less likely to benefit from decentralized digital assets.

Balaji pointed out that employees of top US companies, including Microsoft, Amazon, and Google, predominantly donate to Democrats, and the richest counties in the US, which produce most of the nation's GDP, are largely Democratic strongholds. This suggests that Democrats have more to lose from the rise of crypto, which challenges traditional power structures. In contrast, crypto offers empowerment to smaller countries and marginalized groups.

Balaji's comments sparked a discussion with Castle Island Ventures partner Nic Carter, who agreed that crypto has inherent political leanings. Carter noted that while some left-leaning individuals may see the benefits of crypto, such as increased access to financial services, the technology itself is inherently "rightist" since it decentralizes power and challenges government control.
