Worldcoin's adoption continues to grow despite rising privacy concerns from multiple jurisdictions.

According to its website, the platform has amassed nearly 4 million registered users within a year of its launch, with over 600,000 accounts registered in the past week alone.

Worldcoin, co-founded by Sam Altman, is a blockchain project that allows individuals to verify their human identity through iris scanning. Successful verification grants users a "World ID" credential, which can be integrated into future applications to prove their humanity.

Recently, the project announced integrations with major online platforms, including Minecraft, Reddit, Telegram, Shopify, and Mercado Libre.

These milestones highlight the project's significant adoption despite regulatory scrutiny over its data-handling practices by various authorities.

South Korea begins investigations

Today, South Korea's Personal Information Commission announced it started investigating Worldcoin’s practices on Feb. 29, following complaints of potential data protection violations.

The commission will examine Worldcoin’s methods of collecting, handling, and possibly transferring sensitive personal data internationally. Any breaches of local privacy laws will result in immediate regulatory action.

The regulator also noted that Worldcoin is collecting facial and iris data at ten sites in South Korea. Worldcoin maintains that it only collects 'hashes' of biometric data, not the visual scans themselves.

South Korea joins a growing list of jurisdictions scrutinizing Worldcoin’s data collection practices. Authorities in Hong Kong, France, Germany, Britain, and Kenya have also expressed concerns, with some ordering a halt to user registrations.
