Popular social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) has decided to remove a feature that allowed paid subscribers to set NFTs as profile pictures, US-based tech media TechCrunch reported.

Originally launched under Twitter's previous management in January 2022, the feature enabled Twitter Blue subscribers to showcase NFTs minted on Ethereum (ERC-721 or ERC-1155 tokens) as profile pictures, which were represented by hexagons. Users could click or tap on these profile pictures to access additional information about the NFTs, including details such as the collection, contract address, TokenID, and the app used for minting.

X has now cleared all references to the NFT profile picture feature from its X Premium support page.

"As a Premium subscriber, you can customize your profile to showcase the NFTs you own through a hexagon-shaped profile picture on your account. After temporarily connecting to your crypto wallet, you were able to set up an NFT as your profile picture, which would then be displayed as a special hexagonal shape, identifying you as the owner of that NFT," the previous description of the feature on the site stated.

Users who already had NFTs set as their profile pictures will continue to have hexagonal avatars. It remains unclear whether X will eventually remove these as well.

The removal of this feature is not unexpected, as other social networks have also phased out their NFT experiments. In 2022, both Instagram and Facebook began testing the display and posting of NFTs. However, Meta discontinued support for NFTs on Instagram and Facebook in March 2023.

This decision comes several months after a report revealed that 95% of the once-hyped crypto assets have plummeted to rock-bottom valuations. Although NFTs have passed their peak, the NFT market has shown signs of recovery in recent months, with trade volumes exceeding $1.6 billion, according to NFT aggregator CryptoSlam.
