zkSync has defended its criteria for the upcoming ZK token airdrop scheduled for June 17 on the Ethereum-based layer-2 scaling solution, addressing criticisms and concerns about Sybil attack safeguards. The platform clarified these issues in its regularly updated FAQ document, outlining strategies to mitigate Sybil attacks—where users create multiple wallets to exploit airdrops.

Emphasizing explicit Sybil detection, zkSync detailed a unique airdrop design aimed at accommodating a large number of genuine users while potentially allowing minimal Sybil wallets. The platform acknowledged the challenge posed by advanced Sybils using algorithm-driven strategies that mimic human behavior, making them hard to detect completely.

To prioritize genuine users, zkSync implemented value scaling and multipliers in its approach. It assigned fewer eligibility points to wallets displaying Sybil-like behavior based on low funding, while boosting points for on-chain activities reflecting genuine human engagement. The company acknowledged the likelihood of some Sybils participating in every airdrop but assured that measures were in place to minimize their impact.

In parallel developments, Binance announced its own ZK token airdrop for users not qualifying for zkSync’s official distribution. Binance plans to distribute 10.5 million ZK tokens among over 52,000 users, providing each with 200 ZK tokens. This initiative aims to appease users dissatisfied with the official ZK token distribution process.

Eligibility for Binance’s airdrop requires users to have conducted at least 50 transactions on zkSync Era between February 2023 and March 2024, with a minimum of seven transactions during that period. Participants must not be associated with centralized exchanges, bridges, or contract addresses, and must not have qualified for zkSync’s official airdrop. Binance will also initiate ZK token trading on June 17, offering trading pairs with Bitcoin and First Digital USD (FDUSD).
